A Brave New World: First Day at Medical School

August 7, 2017

This will be forever known as the day I entered medical school at the College of Medicine in the Cebu Doctor's University. To be honest, everything felt so different. I was no longer at what everyone calls the "safe space" of college, but just one step closer to the real world. It would take another four years of grueling training plus additional years of further training to become a doctor.

I am as nervous as equally as everyone else. Medical school for freshmen will be a blank slate; not even the smartest person in class has the knowledge of what is up ahead. We were all told of the fears of medical school such as sleepless nights, tons of study materials, and loss of social life. These are indeed things needed to be taken in a serious manner but personally I should remember that many of our fellow students, and even parents, were able to make it through. We were told that medical school is always difficult but it could be managed through displaying hard work, the proper attitude towards stress, and time management.

This opens a new chapter for me. It would require sacrifice of many things such as interests, social life, and adventures. I may no longer be able to go out on hikes, meet up with friends in bars and nightclubs, watch movies, and even attend important family affairs due to the demands of the curriculum.

One thing is for sure, medical school is brave new world.
